The scheme is aimed at experienced professionals providing arboricultural advice and consultancy services. 

Applicants may include: 

• Independent consultants 
• Local authority arboricultural officers 
• Planning specialists 
• Development and infrastructure advisers 
• Tree risk management specialists 
• Expert witnesses 
• Arboricultural managers 

In order to become an AARC, individuals must first reach the prerequisite level in qualifications, study and experience, and be able to demonstrate a clear understanding and working knowledge of arboriculture and how it is practically applied in a variety of situations.

The awarding of AARC status to an industry professional – whether a consultant or, for example, a tree officer – is made following a rigorous assessment process. All applicants must meet the required business and professional standards.

Once registered with the scheme, consultants are expected to maintain a high standard of professional practice (as detailed in the Application Guide) and to pay an annual subscription fee, which is currently £630 plus VAT for Fellows and £666 plus VAT for Professional members. Registered Consultants are also subject to an on-going Quality Assurance Process – see below.

The application is comprised of:

• The fee for the assessment of the portfolio as specified on the website;
• a certificate of insurance or other evidence of current insurance cover;
• continuing professional development (CPD) records showing that a minimum of 25 hours of relevant CPD have been undertaken annually
• over the preceding 2 years, in accordance with the requirements detailed in the guidance on the Association’s website; 
• and a portfolio of reports/submissions. 

The application process consists of two separate stages: 

1. The submission of a portfolio of reports and supporting information - there are two annual submission dates of 1st March and 1st September - and, if successful;
2. An interview with the assessors to explore any technical issues and to confirm knowledge and understanding of professional practice and behaviours.

Using the application guide and report writing guidance - provide everything required for your portfolio including evidence of your qualifications, experience and professional practice. 

Step 3 – Professional assessment 

Applications are reviewed against the scheme requirements and assessment criteria. 

Step 4 – Achieve registration 

Join a recognised network of professional consultants trusted across the sector. 

Quality Assurance Process 

Once registered with the scheme, consultants must attend an annual ‘Standards and Development Day’, maintain a minimum of 25 hours CPD per year, and comply with the Scheme’s Quality Assurance process.
