Working together for better tree care 

The Arboricultural Association works with government, industry, professional bodies, charities, researchers and educators to raise standards, share knowledge and strengthen the voice of arboriculture. 

Through these relationships, we help ensure that trees, and the skilled professionals responsible for their establishment, management and care, are properly considered in policy, planning, environmental protection and public life. 

Representing the tree care community 

A central part of our role is representing the interests and expertise of the arboricultural community. 

We engage with government departments, parliamentarians, public bodies and sector groups to improve understanding of arboriculture and the contribution it makes to healthy, resilient and sustainable places. 

This includes: 

Responding to government consultations and parliamentary inquiries 

Providing evidence and technical expertise 

Raising issues affecting arboricultural businesses and professionals 

Promoting greater recognition of arboriculture as a distinct profession 

Advocating for the long-term establishment and care of trees, rather than focusing only on planting numbers 

Helping policymakers understand the importance of existing trees, professional tree management and a skilled workforce 

Our engagement is informed by the experience of our members, committees, technical specialists and partners across the tree care community. 

Working with government and Parliament 

We work constructively with decision-makers to ensure arboricultural knowledge contributes to policies affecting trees, communities and the built environment. 

The Association has submitted evidence and responses on subjects including tree planting and establishment, public parks, planning policy, tree health, environmental principles and the future of the arboricultural workforce. 

We also support parliamentary engagement through the All-Party Parliamentary Gardening and Horticulture Group, working alongside organisations from across horticulture, landscaping and the environment. 

Our work helps place issues such as young tree aftercare, professional standards, urban tree management and the value of existing trees more firmly on the political agenda. 

Shaping standards and professional practice 

The Association contributes to the development of standards, guidance and safe working practices used throughout arboriculture.
