I would like to carry out work to trees on my property – do I need permission?

Whether you need permission depends on whether the tree is legally protected.

If your trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order, or you are within a Conservation Area, or the trees are protected by a condition attached to a planning permission, then you will need consent for the works. 

You may need permission if:

  • The tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) 
  • The tree is in a Conservation Area 
  • The tree forms part of woodland (felling licence) 

When permission may not be required

  • Small garden trees (after checks) 
  • Dead trees (evidence should be kept)
