I have a tree which is outside my boundary and not under my control – whose responsibility is it?

Responsibility for a tree normally lies with the owner of the land on which the tree is growing.

If the tree is outside your boundary, you are not usually responsible for its management. 

What you can do

  • Identify the landowner 
  • Raise concerns politely 
  • Keep records of communication 

Your rights

You may usually cut back branches or roots that cross your boundary (subject to protection status), but you must not harm the tree.
